The Nassau County Poet Laureate Society awarded Sydney Johnson a $500 scholarship award on June 2, 2022. NCPL Evelyn Kandel presented the award.

Her school describes her as follows: “You could say that Sydney Johnson comes from a family of writers. Growing up with her mother and three sisters, Sydney sparked an interest in creative writing at a young age. Now, this Glen Cove High School senior has flourished, with her English teacher, Ms. Tulip, noting, “Sydney is able to weave complex tales filled with interesting characters that range from sweet and caring to harrowing and evil. She is a genuine ray of sunshine in her classes.”

Sydney, who has a passion for writing about both fantasy and real-life issues, says that she wants “people to read my writing and see what I see”. In addition to her interest in writing, Sydney is involved in her school’s I Am My Sister Club, founded by her mother, which provides a safe space to support young women in everything from promoting a positive self-image to planning for college. In the fall, Sydney will attend SUNY Old Westbury, where she plans to major in neuroscience, but will continue to pursue her love of creative writing.”
